Austenitic steel and austenitic stainless steel is a class of steel that has developed in recent decades. Among them, austenitic stainless steel production and usage accounts for about 70% of the total output and usage of stainless steel.
Austenitic stainless steel is an excellent material; it has good corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility and is thus widely used in chemical, marine engineering, food, biomedical, petrochemical, and other industries. However, due to its low hardness (HV200~HV250) and poor wear resistance, its use is limited.
In 1926, the shortage of nickel caused by the war inspired people to study using nitrogen to replace part of the nickel to stabilize austenite. As a result of the development of high technology, there was an urgent need for high-performance materials. Adding nitrogen to austenitic steels stabilizes the organization, increases strength, and improves corrosion resistance.

254SMO super austenitic stainless steel:
German Standard Grade: 1.4547
UNS grade: S31254
China Domestic grade: 00Cr20Ni18Mo6CuN
254SMO is a metallic material that is an alloy of 254 stainless steel, iron-molybdenum, and chromium, which is commonly used to make composite metallic materials with high corrosion resistance at high temperatures. 254SMO has higher strength and longer service life than other stainless steel products.
254SMO metal materials have a wide range of applications in energy, petroleum, and chemical industries, ships and marine, environmental protection, and water treatment. Its advantages are reflected in the following: significant thermal resistance, noticeable insulation effect; strong corrosion resistance, corrosion resistance is better than 304, 316L, and other stainless steels; excellent rheological resistance, compared with 304, 316L stainless steel materials; extrusion strength increased by more than 30%; good surface treatment performance, to meet the user’s requirements for a variety of surface treatments; heat treatment after the comprehensive performance is excellent, after a unique process, its Tensile strength and extrusion strength up to good.
In short, 254SMO stainless steel metal materials have the advantages of high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, are widely used in the field of manufacturing, can replace traditional stainless steel products, improve the production efficiency of the factory, extend the service life, better meet the needs of users.
The low carbon content of 254SMO means that the risk of carbide precipitation due to heating is minimal. The steel passes the Strauss Intergranular Corrosion Test (StraussTest ASTMA262 Regulation E method) even after one hour of sensitization at 600-1000 degrees Celsius.
254SMO In pure sulfuric acid, 254SMO has more excellent corrosion resistance than 316L common-type stainless steel. However, compared with 904L (NO8904) type stainless steel, the corrosion resistance of 254SMO is slightly weaker at high concentrations. 254SMO has the most excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid containing chloride ions. Because of the possibility of localized corrosion and uniform corrosion, 316L general-type stainless steel cannot be used in hydrochloric acid, but 254SMO can be used in diluted hydrochloric acid at average temperatures.
In fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF4) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), the corrosion resistance of ordinary stainless steel is minimal, while 254SMO can be used in a fairly wide range of concentrations and temperatures.
254SMO main advantages:
It has good pitting resistance (PREN ≥ 43) and better stress corrosion resistance and is a substitute material for Ni-based alloys and titanium alloys;
Secondly, it has a more excellent performance in high-temperature resistance or corrosion resistance;
It has a higher nitrogen content, so its mechanical strength is higher than other types of austenitic stainless steel, and wear resistance is higher than ordinary materials;
Lower nickel content, so the cost performance is relatively high;
In addition, 254SMO also has high ductility, impact strength, and good weldability.
254SMO product applications:
- Oil, petrochemical equipment, such as petrochemical equipment in the bellows.
- 2, pulp, paper bleaching equipment, such as pulp digester, bleaching equipment, filtering scrubber with the barrel cylinder, and pressure roll.
- 3, power plant flue gas desulfurization device, the primary use of parts: the tower of the absorption tower, flue, stall door plate, internal parts, spray system, etc.
- 4, offshore systems or seawater treatment, such as power plants with seawater cooling thin-walled condensate pipes desalination treatment equipment.
